Advanced Film Workshop – Class Description

Dscf1155 Web | Advanced Film Workshop - May 12Th &Amp; 19Th

Ready to go beyond the basics and start shooting film with real intention?

This two-part workshop is designed for photographers who already understand the fundamentals of 35mm film and are ready to take the next step. If you’re comfortable loading film, adjusting your settings, and getting decent results, but want more consistency, confidence, and creative control, this workshop is for you!

Over two sessions, we’ll dive deeper into how film actually responds to light, how to make smarter exposure decisions, and how to shape the final look of your images on purpose.

We’ll cover both 35mm and medium format (120) film, with a focus on real-world shooting scenarios, creative techniques, and building a workflow that works for you.

What you’ll learn:

  • Advanced metering & exposure techniques: Learn how to read light more intentionally and make better decisions in tricky lighting situations.
  • How to get consistent results on film: Understand why your photos don’t always turn out the way you expect and how to fix it.
  • Shooting in different lighting conditions: Work through real-world scenarios including harsh sunlight, window light, mixed lighting, and low light.
  • Using flash & strobes with film: Learn when and how to use flash from simple on-camera flash to studio strobes to balance light, avoid common mistakes, and add a creative edge to your images.
  • Choosing the right film stock for your style: Learn how different films actually behave so you can choose the right one for the look you want.
  • Introduction to medium format (120): Explore the differences between 35mm and medium format, when it’s worth using, and how to get started.
  • Creative techniques: Experiment with approaches like double exposures, shooting expired film, and pushing your film for different results.
  • Working with a film lab & scanning: Learn how to communicate with your lab, what to ask for, and how scanning impacts the final look of your images.
  • Printing & archiving your work: Best practices for preserving your negatives and bringing your images to life through print.

What you’ll get:

  • Two days (1.5 hour sessions each) of all things film
  • Packet with detailed description of film formats, film stocks, gear, and more!
  • A clear framework for improving your film photography
  • Cheat sheet & film swag
  • Tour of our film lab
  • Q+A with an experienced film photographer
  • Coupon for FREE film processing & premium scans ($21 value!)
