Artist Statement

“My photographic journey has continued for more than 50 years and with all sorts of processes and formats. My first camera was an old Argus I borrowed from my father. But even with a bottle bottom for a lens I could start to see. The quality improved with better cameras but I was always looking for the image – the way the tones played with each other and the way the photograph affected the viewer’s emotion. I was always interested by the science of the photographic art and taught myself the zone system method not only to improve my black and white quality but to improve my vision as well. The science carried on even when I left the darkroom and started to work in the Lightroom. Going digital allowed me new methods of expression and experimentation. I like to work in series because a group of images expressed my feelings more than just the one. My latest effort is in photo impressionism.

The series started when I was photographing shallow stream beds. I noted the way the water surface rippled and by adjusting color, tonality, and dynamic range the image started to look like an impressionist painting. I don’t think I have been influenced by other photographers but rather the old painting masters. They knew so much about the interplay of color, texture, and the way it played with the viewer’s sensibilities.

All of the photographs presented are made with multiple images so as to increase the dynamic range, focus and visual gamut. I try to find the balance between the science and the craft – I can only hope I have given credit to the impressionistic art.”  – Bruce Lewis
